Hi guys, great initiative with setting this up. A simple request...
I started coaching a couple of years ago when my oldest turned 6 and added a team of 5 year olds this year and I've a 3 year old waiting in the wings, so I might be at this for a while. As you'd imagine, there is a variety of skill levels at such a young age. Some very skillful for their age and some who have clearly never kicked a ball in their lives. I've done the Fundamentals course and will shortly do Learn to Train. Fundamentals was excellent on how to coach, but as was explained it was not about 'what' to coach. I am aware there are many online resources on session planning and suggested activities and SSG's but what I'm looking for is anything on coaching very basic technique. Currently I just base this on my experience (having moved here from Ireland a few years ago where I grew up with soccer). So a fellow who has never kicked a ball, who runs up to ball and attempts to kick with first foot to approach ball, without planting foot, so they end up doing a hop mixed with a toe poke and fall over. This fellow needs to be shown how to place his standing foot next to the ball, kick the ball with inside of other foot, follow through etc. This is clearly pretty basic and simple, but when I am basing it off my own experience, it makes me question myself. Am I teaching correct technique? And as it's only going to get more advanced, I'd like to make sure I'm teaching correctly. So is there a recommended text or resource for this? And thIngs like dribbling (I demonstrate), body shape (they start off facing goalie with back to opposition to receive from kick out - I advise them to stand so they can see both goals, or where the ball is coming from AND where they want it to go), receiving on the back foot, staying goalside, jockey etc. etc.
For example I saw an excellent 3 step instruction on defending on twitter from Griller Monsoon 1) run up fast to the person on the ball 2) slow down 3) get down low; others added in to move in the direction of the ball and establishing a front and back foot. This is such a simple yet great explanation and while I have demonstrated this, I probably haven't put it in such good wording.
So that's my long winded way of asking if anyone recommends good resources for teaching basic technique. Thanks.
