So US Soccer Development Academy announced that it is expanding. The big news (although not unexpected) for GTA youth soccer enthusiast is that the Toronto FC Academy is joining the league at u15 and above. You can read the announcement below. I think this is a good move for the academy as the teams will have access to a higher caliber of competition presumably as it plays against other development academies in the U.S. including MLS academies. The move is in alignment with the TFC Jrs program which is a pay for play development training up to u13, while TFCA will phase out the u12/u13/u14 academy. www.ussoccerda.com/20180309-news-16-new-clubs-added-for-2018-2019-season |

TFC is a team based out of e Toronto area in Ontario. They should have some type of place in the OPDL. It is absolutely absurd for them not to have a team playing in the OPDL. If they want to have academy teams playing outside Ontario, that's great but they should consider having another team or "B" tea, playing in the OPDL league at all levels.That is a slap in the face to Ontario soccer. I would like to know how many Canadian born players on on the TFC MLS team

Forcing them to play in OPDL would hinder the kids' development - you really think that will help get Canadian kids into the first team? And no professional academy has two teams per age group - it would be a drain on the club's resources. Having those kids play up a year was pointless, because those older kids aren't technically nor tactically at a high enough level; they're just bigger. And it would be an even bigger waste of time for them to play at their own age. So the only real option is the USSDA league. TFC has only been participating in OPDL for marketing reasons.
I imagine they will play in OPDL this summer though, since the USSDA season has already started and the next season won't start until late summer/early fall?

New to the OPDL this season after coming over from the OASL and previous experience with CAF, Club & SAAC. From what I’ve seen thus far in friendlies, OPDL has the highest concentration of the best players which I’m happy to see as that’s one of the points of it all in the first place. That doesn’t mean there aren’t better teams in other leagues...it just means OPDL appears to provide the best competition IMHO. It’s akin to the EPL being the most competitive league but not necessarily having the best teams (i.e Barca, Bayern & Real Madrid). Apart from having to “pay for play”, things generally appear to be moving in the right direction. My two cents.

Most of the OPDL teams are not that good compared to SAAC / OASL. OPDL should be merged with OASL Tier 1.

Yes, anything towards merging and simplifying is a step in the right direction. Until then, its impossible to really gauge which teams are better or worse from one league vs another. May's Umbro Tournament will be interested as there are lots of OPDL & OASL/SAAC teams that will be directly competing against each other.
